Fishing Line Spool
2003
Packaging design for high-end fly fishing line to be produced by a manufacturer of floss. Concepts include multi-function packaging and also explores forms that would differentiate the brand when merchandised.

Clockwise From Top Left:

This spool design is inspired by automotive rims. The form also allows for a sturdy grip while transferring the line to the reel. It includes a line cutter, measuring guide and cleat detail for securing the line once the spool packaging is open.

Allowing for one handed spooling, this spool clips directly to fishing rod. The form is inspired by fishing reels. It includes a finger-spin hole and a line cutter.

This spool includes a measuring guide and line cutter. The lobed side of the spool is designed so that you can easily guide the spool with your finger while transferring the line to the reel. The spool is shown with a card hanger.

Having a triangular shaped spool would clearly differentiate this brand from their competitors, and it would also be easy to hold while spooling. The concept on the left has a "hang tag" hole designed into the spool, but on the right there is a clam shell packaging that would be used to hang the spool. These concepts show two ways that the user can tell how much line remains. The left spool is translucent. On the right, the line is kept on a round roll, but there is a reveal.
